52docs Week 7 - This time it's personal

Oscars this weekend so let’s watch another of the feature doc nominees which if you’re in the US is locked away on Paramount+ but if you’re in the UK or know how to use a VPN you can watch for free on the BBC. It’s also for sale/ rent through the consistently excellent Dogwoof.

A win on Sunday for No Other Land (now getting a limited DIY theatrical release in the US) would be an enormous middle finger to the establishment, so of course we’d love that to happen.

On the shorts side, I went to a screening of all five and have to say although the standard was higher than years past, three of the films were intensely dark. My favorite of the two that weren’t about institutional violence was the charming Instruments Of A Beating Heart which you can watch on YouTube (look at those viewing numbers!).

At a time when stories about people standing up to institutions are more important than ever, Black Box Diaries looks like a deeply personal effort to speak truth to power.
