Rolling Juneteenth and Father’s Day into our next film, an extraordinary exploration of history and inheritance.
After Sherman would make an amazing double bill with Natchez. Actually, throw Descendant and Who We Are into the mix too. They all weave the threads of suppressed history across generations, right up to the present day aftershocks of oppression and dispossession that define so much of US culture.
It still blows my mind how sanitized the history we learned in school was - nobody taught us, for example, how the only way slavery was abolished in the UK was to buy out all the slave owners, through a debt that took the British people almost two hundred years to pay off.
We should put together an alternative curriculum - sort of a Howard Zinn-esque history of the world. Start here:
