Today is Earth Day and a great opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the only planet we’ll truly call home.

Like Mr Rogers said “Look for the helpers” and there is no shortage of documentaries about people far braver than I who put their lives on the line to defend Mother Earth.

I had the good fortune to hear Robin Wall Kimmerer speak recently in Portland, and one of the many wise and beautiful insights she shared was that Indigenous land is better defended against rampant extraction. It makes sense - when you have a deep relationship with your surroundings, and feel a responsibility to their future, you interact very differently. Her solution? A simple but profound shift from conquerors to caretakers.

There are countless examples of ways we can serve nature and work with her to service the flourishing of life. This week’s film honours those on the literal battlefield in the wild places, fighting for their survival so we have something left to be in relationship with.
