52docs / 10 - Understanding each other's stories
Last week’s selection is going to stay with me for a long time. It disavowed the term ‘documentary’ within the first few minutes, and then expanded what that word could mean in every direction.
Next up, a film that raises questions about one of the most contentious issues of our time.
The filmmakers mobilized quickly in the aftermath of October 7th when they learned relatives had been taken as hostages.
The resulting documentary has had to thread the needle of consent, trust and truth and won awards for its intimate portrayal of people thrown into world events and wrestling with the complexity of how to respond.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I did a couple of days filming on this one - some of the family live here in Portland, and cinematographer Yoni Brook is an old friend - and I’m going to be at the Q&A at the local screening on Tuesday 17th next week.
